What is Mintlify?

Mintlify is a developer documentation platform with AI built into its core workflow. It started as a tool for generating docstrings inside the IDE — you hover over a function, click a button, and Mintlify writes a clear explanation of what the code does. That feature still exists as a VS Code extension, but the company has grown into a full documentation platform used by hundreds of developer-facing companies to host their API references, guides, and changelogs.

The hosted documentation platform is where Mintlify shines most. It generates beautifully designed documentation sites from your OpenAPI specs, MDX files, and existing code comments, with a built-in AI chat widget (called Mintlify Chat) that lets visitors ask questions about your docs and get instant answers grounded in your actual documentation content. This reduces the support load for developer relations and documentation teams significantly, since developers can find answers without opening a support ticket.

The AI writing assistant helps documentation authors maintain accuracy over time. When code changes, Mintlify can detect which documentation sections have become stale based on code diffs and flag them for review. This tackles one of the most persistent problems in developer documentation — the drift between what the code does and what the docs say it does. The platform also includes analytics to identify which sections of your documentation are being searched and what questions are going unanswered.
