What Retool actually is

Retool is a low-code platform for building internal software: admin panels, dashboards, approval workflows, ops tools, the stuff every growing company needs but nobody wants to hand-build from scratch. You drag in a table, a form, a chart, wire each component to a database or API, and ship an app your support team or finance department can use behind a login. Retool has layered AI on top of that over the past couple of years: "Retool AI" adds AI Actions and, more recently, Agents that can call tools and reason over your data, sitting alongside the original drag-and-drop builder. What Claude Code actually is

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It runs in a terminal, inside an IDE extension, or in a browser-based cloud environment, reads your repository, plans a change, edits files, runs tests and commands, and iterates largely on its own once you point it at a task. It has no concept of "internal tool" as a product category and no drag-and-drop anything; it is a general-purpose engineer that happens to be very good at working inside a codebase you already own. Retool vs Claude Code: same job or different jobs?

Type "retool claude code" into Google and you might expect a knockout comparison. There isn't one, because the two rarely fight for the same task. Where they overlap is narrow: quickly wiring a form or a dashboard on top of an API. Everywhere else, one of them is clearly the better fit. Here's how that plays out job by job, rather than as a checklist of features neither product markets the same way.

How Retool and Claude Code actually connect

This is the part most comparison pages skip, and it's the reason people search "retool claude mcp" in the first place. There are three separate, real connections here, not one vague integration.

Claude models can power Retool AI. Retool organizations come with a built-in Anthropic resource using a Retool-managed key, so AI Actions and Agents can call Claude out of the box, billed through Retool's AI-credit system. If you'd rather control cost and model choice yourself, you can swap in your own Anthropic API key; usage is then billed by Anthropic directly instead of through Retool credits.

Retool Agents can call out to MCP servers. A Retool agent can connect to a remote MCP server over Streamable HTTP or SSE (local stdio servers aren't supported) using OAuth 2.0, basic auth or a bearer token, then use whatever tools that server exposes: Jira, GitHub, Linear, your own internal APIs. Here Retool is acting as an MCP client.

Retool itself is an MCP server Claude Code can talk to. Since May 2026 Retool has run its own MCP server, in public beta, reachable at your instance's /mcp endpoint, and there is an Anthropic-verified Retool connector listed on claude.com. Point Claude Code, Cursor or Codex at it and you can list apps and workflows, run queries, manage users, and generate or edit Retool apps without opening the Retool UI. That's the literal answer to "does Retool work with Claude Code": yes, through this connector, in the build-in-your-agent, deploy-onto-Retool direction.

Pricing, September 2026

Neither product prices the way a checkbox comparison implies. Retool bills builders and internal users separately and layers AI credits on top of every plan; Claude Code isn't sold on its own at all, it rides along inside whichever Claude subscription, or API key, you already pay for. The pricing table on this page reflects the numbers published on each vendor's own pricing page when we checked; Retool's page localizes by region, so confirm the currency shown for your account before budgeting.

Who should pick which

If you're a solo developer or a small team moving fast inside a codebase you already own (fixing bugs, shipping a feature, writing scripts), Claude Code is the more direct tool, and arguably the more enjoyable one to use day to day. If you're a beginner who wants a working app to appear from a plain description without touching a terminal, start with our beginner-friendly tools guide instead; Claude Code rewards people who already read code comfortably.

If what you actually need is an internal tool other people at your company will log into, with permissions, an audit trail, a staging environment, and someone other than you able to maintain it after you move on, that's Retool's job, and it's a job Claude Code was never built to do. The verdict

Comparing Retool and Claude Code head-to-head, as if they were competitors, misses what actually happened by 2026: they became infrastructure for each other. Claude is one of the model providers available underneath Retool AI. Retool, through its own MCP server and Anthropic's verified connector, is now a place Claude Code can build into and deploy onto. Pick Claude Code when the deliverable is code in a repository. Pick Retool when the deliverable is an app other humans at your company will open every day. And if your workflow spans both, stop treating this as an either-or decision: wire them together and let each one do the part it's actually good at.
